Bike Security

With the increase in bike theft, 50% riders do not lock their machines properly and the implications attached to annual insurance policies, it pays, literally to do as much as you can to ensure your bike is as theft proof as possible.

Alarm immobilisers are effective as the thief not only sets the alarm off but is also unable to ride the bike away. Some insurers will lower the cost of your annual policy if you have invested in additional security so enquire before you sign up. Most bikes are not fitted with additional security measures so it's down to you.
  • Fitting your bike with a Thatcham 2-3 way immobilizer or Sold Secure approved system is a good way to start, a thief will move on to another vehicle without one if this has been fitted. Buy additional security locks and remote alarms.
  • Park in motorcycle designated areas where ground anchors are found, the most common theft is where the thief lifts the bike with chains attached.
  • If possible install a ground anchor at your home address and always keep the bike out of site.
  • Always take your keys with you and do not leave them in view at home, thieves use cat flaps, small windows and letter boxes to hook the keys on a length of wire.
  • Put obvious security markings on as many parts of your bike as possible, using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), the registration number or your postcode linked to a recognised database.
  • Mark the bike and it's parts with an ultra violet pen, it won't stop the theft but it could help identify your bike if found.
  • Trials, Moto Cross and Enduro bikes can also be registered with the DVLA free which could help identify them, if stolen, by their engine and frame numbers. The ‘Q' plates issued by them do not need to be attached as long as they remain off the public highways.

You can get more information about alarms, immobilisers and other security devices by phoning the Vehicle Security National Helpline on 0870 5502006 or the Sold Secure Helpline on 01327 264687.
